The Guest Lecture we had in Hendon Campus on 04 Feb 08. This session was very interesting. we talked about Cross-cultural Experinces incudes language, wording, food, houses, streets, misunderstanding in communication etc. , Smilarities across ethnicities, Difference between Ethnicities – look, soial norms, values and ways of doing things etc, About sub cultures – ethnic minorities, religious, youth, class structures, etc, culture, Artefacts, Globalised Products, globalised Brands includes nike, coca cola, ford, nokia, ikea .etc, Problems with foreign markets, solutions for foreign markets, Localisation, Products and software localisation, Formal and technical aspects of language, other cultural issues, local conversation and practise. in this discussion we all shared our views and experiences in terms of culture.

Reflective Design
Phoebe Sengers, Kristen Boehner, Shay David and Joseph ‘jofish’ Kaye, Cultural Embedded Computing Group, Cornell Information Science – Reflective Design
They have describe reflective design, a practice which combines analysis of the ways in which technologies reflect and perpetuate unconscious cultural assumptions, with design, building, and evaluation of new computing devices that reflect alternative possibilities.
we talked about the two case studies that thay have mention in their paper which are, Reflective Design in the Art Mueseum, and Intimate Objects. Further we discussed about Foundations of Reflective Design, it includes the Participatoty design, Value-Sensitive Design, Critical Design, Ludic Design also we taked about Critical Technical Practice, Reflections in action.

Experience Prototyping
Marion Buchenau and Jane Fulton Suri, Experince prototyping .
We have discussed this paper in our class Current issues in interaction design.
“Prototypes” are representation of a design made before final artifacts exists. prototypes created to inform both design process and design decisions. They range from sketches and different kind of models at various levels “looks like”, “Behave likes” and “works like” to explore and communicate proposition about design and its context.
prototyping is a key activity within the design of interactive systems.
“Experience Prototyping” define as to emphasize the experiential aspect of whatever representation are needed to successfully (re)live or convey and experience with a product, space or system.
Operation definition can say an Experience prototype is any kind of representation, in any medium, that is design to unerstand, explore or communicate what it might be like to engage with the product, space or systems we are desiging. techniques can be storyboards, scenarios, sketches, video etc.
experience prototyping is valuable, Understanding existing user experiences and context, Exploring and evaluating design ideas, Communicating ideas to an audience.
The main purpose of Experience prototyping is by doing this activety it is in facilitating the exploration of possible solutions and directing the design team towards a more informed develpment of the user experience and the tangible componets which create it. through EP we are able to evaluate a variety of ideas, by ourselves, with design colleagues, users or clients and through successive iterations mold the user experience.
in this session we have talked about the ROV pilot Experience, controller for an immersive environment, Experiencing an Airplane Interior etc.
This discussions was very helpful for our development project when we were doing our prototypes.

Inclusive ICT
Anybody and Everybody access the Communication Technology.
In our lecture 9 we had a guest lecture with Mrs.Suzette Keith. it is all about the designing a car for oder people. she presented the summary of the research they did and summary of the aspects they looked.
The highlighted point were Why design is impotant? Needs and requrements of older people, its legal position as well as their participatory methodology they looked at.
we discussed the ethical arguments such as citizen quality of oppotunities and participation, the digital divide, business case such as purchasing power, corporate responsibility, empowerment, and workplace legislation. we talked about several economic arguments e.g Tesco website for disability people.
considering the legal position we discussed the effects of disability discrimination and accesibility legislations and standerdisation. The active participations includes the Ethnographic studies, Retrospective accounts, experience with concept.

Ludic Design
Electronic Furniture for the Curious Home: Assessing Ludic Designs in the Field INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMAN–COMPUTER INTERACTION, 22(1), 123–156Copyright © 2007, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc.
Paper discussed about 3 designs they conducted which are , Drift Table, Historical Table Cloth, and Key Table.
Drift Table is it shows slowly scrolling aerial photography controlled by the weight of the objects on its surface.
Historical Table Cloth which creates slowly growing ‘Halos’ around left on it
The Key Table measures the force with which people put things on it and titls a picture frame to indicate their mood.
The concept of ludic engagement covers a wide range of exploratory, self motivated activities. We play not to achieve a goal but rather because the process it self inheritently rewarding. This does not mean that play is unproductive; on the contrary play can be valuable in helping people to explore new relations, to reflect about activities and values and bring awareness new goals and perspectives.

Paper Prototyping
We were supposed to design a photo locket using a paper prototype. The requirements for the Photo locket is,
- Connect to a PC using a USB Cable
- Download Photos from a PC
- View photos
- Delete photos
- Share photos with another photo locket
- Implement a ‘Dream feature’
Paper prototyping was a new experience for me. It was very interesting. It is a very easy way to understand the system functions such as navigation etc. I think paper prototyping is good for small and medium projects.

IDEO Method Cards
![]()
IDEO Method cards are very useful for problem and approaches. We used IDEO cards for our London Zoo project. I think when trying to solve problems IDEO cards helps a lot and its very useful tool. The IDEO cards we used for the project are, Be your customer, Rapid Ethnography, Fly on the wall, Guided Tours, Behavior Mapping, Conceptual Landscape, Error Analysis, Activity Analysis, Draw the Experience, Surveys and Questioners It was very helpful for us to do our project. E.g if we get the Surveys and questioners card it explains How – ask a series of targeted questions in order to ascertain particular characteristics and perception of users. And Why – This is a quick way to elicit answers from a large number of people.

R.O.V Controller
Andy gave a briefing about R.O.V Controller. R.O.V is a controller for a boat; main objective is the camera should be able to recognize the things under the boat. Camera should be able see the left, right, up and down. Andy gave us cardboard, cello tapes, etc to make the camera and the remote control. And we did a role play after complete our prototype.

Introduction to Interaction Design
We had our first class Current Issues in interaction design with Mr. Bob Field. He gave a briefing about the course. Before I come to the introduction I thought interaction designing is more related to HCI (Human Computer Interaction) and software designing. After the intro I have figured out that my idea is not correct because the course is all about products designing, designing principles, behaviours of products, and etc..
Interaction Design is the “Professional discipline that define the behaviour of interactive products and how products communicate their functionality to the people who use them”
We had another class Interaction design practise with Mr. Andy Bardill. It was a very interesting starting to the course. We had to give a briefing about our self; what we did for our first degree, work experience, where did we come from and etc.
We learned about Three key characteristics in ID
1. Focus on users and user needs
2. Specific usability and user experience goal
3. Iteration
6 usability specific criteria
- Effectiveness
- Efficiency
- Safety
- Utility
- Learnability
- Memorability
